Convert Video to GIF

Turn a clip from an MP4, MOV or WebM video into an animated GIF.

Your files are processed on your device and are never uploaded.

This tool turns a part of a video into an animated GIF. Pick where the clip starts and how long it lasts, choose the frames per second and the width, and download the GIF. You can also slow it down, speed it up, play it backwards or as a boomerang. It works with MP4, MOV and WebM, adds no watermark, and your video is never uploaded.

How to Convert a Video to a GIF

  1. Choose your video, or drag and drop it into the box above. It opens in a player.
  2. Pick the part you want. Type the start in seconds and the duration (up to 30 seconds), or play the video, pause at the right moment and tick Start from current video time.
  3. Choose the frames per second and the width. 10 FPS and 480 px suit most GIFs.
  4. Set the speed, direction and loop if you like.
  5. Click Make GIF and download it.

Which Frame Rate Should You Pick?

FPSLooksBest for
5Choppy, like a flip bookThe smallest files, slow scenes
10Smooth enough for most clipsReactions, memes, chat apps
15SmoothSport, dancing, quick movement
20–25Close to the videoShort clips where smoothness matters most

Every frame is a full picture, so twice the frame rate means about twice the file size.

Can I Convert HD or 4K Video?

Yes. The video can be any resolution your browser can play, but the GIF is made at the width you choose, from 240 to 800 px. GIF is not a good format for big pictures, and a full HD GIF would be huge. Pick the width the GIF will be shown at.

Why Is the GIF Bigger Than the Video?

A video only stores what changes from one frame to the next, using very smart compression. A GIF stores far more of every frame and can only use 256 colours. So a few seconds of GIF can be bigger than a minute of video. To keep it small:

  • Keep it short. 2 to 5 seconds is ideal for a GIF that loops.
  • Use a smaller width, such as 360 or 480 px.
  • Lower the frame rate to 10 or less.
  • Compress the result with the GIF Compressor.

Slow Motion, Reverse and Boomerang

Speed goes from 0.5× for slow motion to 3× for a fast-forward look. Reverse plays the clip backwards. Boomerang plays it forwards and then backwards, which makes a smooth loop with no jump at the end.

Your Video Never Leaves Your Device

The frames are taken from the video in your web browser. Your video is not uploaded, so even private clips stay on your phone or computer. GIFs have no sound, so the audio is not used.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert an MP4 to a GIF?
Choose the MP4, set the start time and duration, pick the frames per second and width, and click Make GIF.
Which video formats work?
MP4, MOV and WebM work in most browsers. MKV works if your browser can play it. If a video won't open, try it in Chrome or Edge.
How long can the GIF be?
Up to 30 seconds. Short GIFs of 2 to 5 seconds look best and stay small.
Does the GIF keep the sound?
No. The GIF format has no sound, so only the pictures are used.
Is there a file size limit?
No. The video is read in your browser and never uploaded, so the only limit is what your browser can play.
Is Video to GIF free to use?
Yes. Video to GIF is completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many times you use it.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Your files are processed directly in your web browser on your own device. Nothing is uploaded or stored, and the file is gone from memory when you close the tab.
